Remembering a talk with Manose
February 13, 2010

When I was putting the musicians together for Light at the Door, I sent a song to a well-known bansuri flute player. This was a new arena for me but it was lovely to be speaking with him. He was driving  his car along the coast of California, playing my original version of “Ya Devi” in the background. I could tell he was having a great time – driving, surrounded by the ocean air, with the backdrop of the hills and the gorgeous valleys, listening to a song of Mother Divine. I could feel the freedom of those moments as we were listening together, experiencing our 2 oceans as one. It was very cool. We were laughing and then he said, “It’s all about the longing isn’t it! I would love to play on this.” It took my breath away because that is exactly what it is. The feeling when I sing the songs of the Veda…Veda Leela…the song of life… is just that, the longing. The longing for the beauty of the Divine that is so lively, deep in our hearts, the expressions, waiting to be born and re-manifested into this life, the source, course and goal of our very own Divine nature. Sometimes I am just washed over with so much beauty that I cannot believe I am so fortunate to be on this earth. Born in the image and likeness of God – one and the same. How can we ever in our small way say thank you for this life? And this is the very reason I am so grateful I hear the songs. They are the sounds of the wordless motion within the pulses in the sweet melodies of  heaven. We, the music-makers, I think, we are just listening and  repeating what we hear. Tonight, on this Maha Shiva Ratri – the Great Shiva night, I promise to listen more attentively and surrender to every moment more and more.

I started this day writing on facebook :   “Ahhh, the way beautiful music moves my heart..I am so much better all the way around when I am in this space. There is no up or down – no inside or out – no charge, no retreat…just the fullness of this moment where I just STAY! ”      And tonight I end with:  Father, thank you so for this creation, for the knowledge that is available to us, for the emotions that move us, and for the deep silence that contains all That is and underlies every melody that is born to sing your praise.

Jai Guru Dev
